The History of Chinese Paper-cutting (II)

With regard to the history of the handicraft arts – Chinese paper-cutting, that is, paper-cutting in its real science, should have a beginning with the emergence of paper in Han Dynasty, which benefits the birth, development, and popularity of the paper-cutting.

It’s known to all, paper is very easy to mildew and rot. In additional, the southeast of china is humid all the year round. May and June even have a long rainy season, so paper products are very east to decay over time. However, paper-cutting is a product that is so common in china, once decay, it’s so easy for people to make a deal of new ones.

On the contrary, in the part of northwest of China, the climate is relative dry, so the paper cannot be rotten easily. That is also considered the reason the first paper-cutting was found in the northwest of  China – Xinjiang.
